Hi everybuddy, it's me, Angel Sammy, sharing a really important message from the Rainbow Bridge! Guess what today is? It's National Feral Cat Day, the day started in 2001 by Alley Cat Allies - the amazing group dedicated to helping feral and stray cats across the nation.
I actually know LOTS about feral cats (you know, those kitties who aren't socialized to humans that you probably see around your neighborhood), because I used to live in a feral cat colony before I ended up at PAWS (where Mom and Dad adopted me from). Here are a few facts you might not know:
1. Feral cats have lived alongside humans for more than 10,000 years! They are the same species as pet cats, but are not socialized to people, so they are not adoptable. Ferals live in groups called colonies and can thrive in all kinds of settings.
2. Trap-Neuter-Return - a humane approach to managing and caring for feral cats - is the only effective method of stabilizing feral cat colonies. With TNR, cats who live outdoors are humanely trapped and checked out medically, spayed or neutered and given their shots, and then re-released. Some of these cats are found to be friendly (like lucky me!), and are put up for adoption. :)
3. In the last decade, the number of local governments with official policies endorsing TNR for feral cats has increased tenfold, with hundreds of cities and towns successfully carrying out TNR.

I hope you liked my message. Big hugs and headbonks to you all!
Your pal,
Angel Sammy

XOXO
Hi Angel Sammy! We love the ferals around here too. We always wish we could do more.
Hugs to all of you :-)
Hi Sammy! It's so nice to see you. We support the feral kitties too. Thanks for getting the word out to help educate other humans about feral cats. :)
Hi Angel Sammy, that is one great post. We love our feral kitties. They are great cats and are just a little more shy than tame cats. All of mine are very very tame with me and are learning to trust other people. It just takes a little longer.
That is a great message, Angel Sammy! And great to see you :-) TNR is a great program and I hope it will be more widespread.
Sweet Angel Sammy thank you for reminding us about feral kitties - we don't have many in the UK and they are usually in the big cities but that's not to say we don't care about them.
Luv Hannah and Lucy xx xx
That was such a great post Angel Sammy. We love all feral kitties, especially the ones we care for every single day.
we had forgotten you were hanging out with feral cats :)
TNR is a great program and wonderful option for cats who have had no exposure to humans and would prefer to live outdoors in a colony. Their numbers don't increase, and a human caretaker feeds and watches over them. It's a win win for them and the most humane option. The kittens trapped in the process can be socialized and become sweet family members like our own dear Tommie and Mickey Mouser. Thank you Angel Sammy. You live on in our hearts.
xxoo

I didn't know about National Feral Cat Day. Thanks for sharing! :-)
Many ferals can be a bit standoffish. They need to live their own lives, but are really glad if humans can help with food, spaying/neuturing, and medical care.
Many of us and our predecessors were born outside to feral moms, but luckily were handled by humans when we were itty bitty and so were able to socialize. Win-win for us. Sammy was so handsome. We are sorry we never got to know him. This was an excellent post. XOCK, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo
Thanks for sharing this important information! If we are to ever hope to control the overpopulation problem and lessen the number of kitties who fill shelters, we must think outside the box and use innovative methods like this that have been proven to work. No kitty deserves to be born into a world where it will starve or be diseased.
Great information sweet Sammy. We think the TNR program is a super program. We hope more people learn of it and lots of sweet ferals get help. Hugs and nose kisses
Pawsome post. I bet I was a part of a feral colony cos I’m still feral. MOL! TW says 2 of the Maple Cats are friendlier than I am. Hmmph!
Thanks for your heartfelt message, Sammy. We have cared for ferals and strays for several years. Currently we have 3 - one is very tame and we consider her ours and take care of her. The other two I'm sure used to belong to someone, because even though they are afraid of me, they allow me to get fairly close before backing off. I worry that if we decide to go south for a winter in the future, of what will become of these cats/what I should do. The tame one can go to a farm as a barn cat, I suppose. She is 6 years old and has never lived inside. I want to do the kindest thing...
That's what they try to do in Belgium, catch the ferals, neuter them and let them free again. I agree that's the best solution !
OMC Sammy! It is so nice to hear from you. I have known lots of feral kitties before and some of them even became our pets, kind of like you.
So good to see you on the blog again Sammy. Great post.
Bless your heart...all of you! ~xo~

PepiSmartDog: I didn't realise it was Feral Cat Day last Thursday.
Please feel free to always let me know in advance and I'll include the special events in the blog hop.
Do you know that in Australia, we do 'not' have trap, neuter and release?
Thank you for joining our Thankful Thursday Weekly Blog Hop.
We always appreciate you making the effort and we really enjoy reading your posts.
Hope to see you next week too. *waves paw* :=o)
