Black Cat Appreciation Day

Hi, I'm Allie, and I live at PAWS. Happy Black Cat Appreciation Day!

Did you know us black cats are only half as likely to get adopted as cats of other colors? And that, on average, we stay several months longer in shelters than any other cats? I really don't understand this. I mean, just look at my picture ... us black cats are beautiful, sweet, silly, and lovable!

Come check out all the wonderful kitties available for adoption at PAWS today.  And please remember to consider me and the other black cats ... you wouldn't want to miss out now, would you?  And be sure to tell them that Allie sent you! :)

  2. You are ABSOLUTELY right. We have a black kitty bruffer and although he is sometimes furry gruff (he is 15), he is furry lovable.

  5. Allie, happy Black Cat Appreciation Day! We certainly hope you find a wonderful forever home soon!

It's too bad that in North American culture black cats traditionally mean "bad luck" -- what a stupid superstition, especially in this day and age!

  6. Allie is gorgeous!
We didn't realize it was Black Cat Appreciation Day until we started to make the rounds tonight.

I love black cats - I was specifically looking for one when I adopted Luna. I saddens me that so many have a harder time finding homes.

  7. How could anyone not love you, Allie? We don't understand why black cats have a harder time either. Hopefully, the trend isn't rooted in superstition.

  8. As you know, we appreciate Black cats too. Allie you are a great example of the wonderful Black kitties. They have super personalities and are just nice cats. We have three of them here. Take care.

  10. Mom has always been a fan of black cats ~ she thinks they are adorable. She adopted 2 beautiful black panther cats in her twenties, from a rescue shelter ~ and now some 30 years later she still loves and misses them. They were very special.

In the UK black cats are considered to bring good luck ~ especially if one walks across your path.

We wish all the black cats out there love and luck in finding their special forever home. xx

  11. Allie, i completely agree!! black cats are WONDERFUL, i think it's stupid that a lot of people don't even consider adopting cats like you. :(( i'm glad that you and the cats like you at PAWS have a nice, safe place to stay while you wait for your forever homes... i really wish more homeless black cats could say the same. :(

  12. I love Allie...and the black cat situation is the reason I couldn't let my Atticus go after fostering him as a kitten. I knew there was a good chance he would stay at PAWS long into his teens or adulthood. I love him to pieces and don't regret keeping him for a second, despite the fact that I am now up to five animals. He is my black kitty in a family of ginger cats and dogs :-).

  13. You are lovely Allie! Mom agrees that these kitties get overlooked and it isn't right....and our house panther Mo agrees!

  14. What a great photograph of Allie! In some countries (smart countries where it's also illegal to declaw) black cats are good luck!

  15. Black cats are the black panthers of the cat world: sleek, regale, mysterious and elegant. Add their individual personalities to the mix and what's there not to love?!
Let's hope this day makes folks more aware and more black cats find forever homes as a result of it! :)

  18. Black cats are very popular in the UK as they are supposed to be lucky - brides often have cardboard black cat pictures to hold on their wedding day.

  21. That's unbelievable ! My very first cat was black only her nose was pink, she was the most intelligent cat I ever had and shared my life for 20 years ! She travelled with me around Italy, went shopping with me, and was always with me when I was invited by friends. She followed me or sat on my shoulder or walked on a leash. She loved driving in the car ! I never had a cat like her again.

  29. Black cats are wonderful and the stigma against them makes me want to cry :(

  30. We are puzzled over the phenomenon as well; the same holds true for black dogs. Next to white, I don't think there is any sleeker, more handsome fur choice.

  31. Hi Allie!

You are very handsome, so sweet, and truly to be appreciated!

  33. Well, aren't you just the most beautiful girl ever? I too am a glorious House Panther and think there are no more beautiful kitties around!

But say--what is this Black Cat Appreciation Day and why did my Human not bring me a gift?

  34. Allie, you are a gorgeous black kitty that's for sure. We wish that people would adopt more black cats. We have a special fondness for black cats at our house.

  35. Our Mama says the black kitties at the organization where she volunteers have the same problem... and it extends to black doggies, too! We don't wanna say anything but isn't that sort of, like, racism? To not like an animal just because of the color of their skin...er... fur? We think that is so sad... our two older sisters were both black dogs, and our cousin Judah is a black dog too. Black cats and dogs are beautiful!

  36. you are still such a beautiful girl...my mommy is crazy about you.

  43. you know I've been very sad and my whiskers are all day with many tears for my boyfriend crossed the Rainbow Bridge as you say and now is another star in the sky but this is just me ..... he was still very young and the doctors thought he was out of breath by the balls and then by peneumonia and he grew increasingly worse until one doctor said he had the polmões filled with liquid and I had to take away my love broke down and went away ...
    Good weekend friend

  45. Oh my, you are a beauty. Surely you will get a forever home soon. I didn't realize the statistics about black cats not getting adopted as much as others.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I've always found black cats to be beautiful but have heard about this strange phenomenon. It is the case too with black dogs. The Animal Rescue League of Iowa has done some special promotions: Black Cat Club, Black Dog Club, promotions for striped cats (adopted at "stars and stripes" time, reduced cost), "Mommy and Me" promotion to help not just the adorable kittens but also the adorable mother to find their home, etc. Have a great week, Kevin and Tracey!

  47. Yes Allie you're gorgeous! And don't worry I have faith you'll find a great home. I've never had problems getting black foster kitties adopted :) Did you know there are people out there looking for their dream black cat to take home?
